Quiz, Quiz, Trade

Students work in pairs to generate a flashcard with questions and answers. Trade cards between groups of student dyads. Pass cards forward; instructor asks the class for answers and offers clarifying information as necessary. 

 

Minute Paper

Students answer 2 questions (What was the most important thing you learned during this class? And What important question remains unanswered?)

Goal Ranking & Matching

Students list and prioritize 3 to 5 goals they have for their own learning in the course.

Pause Procedure

Stop instructing momentarily; give students time to catch up, organize work, and work on class notes.

 

Misperception

Intended to uncover prior knowledge or beliefs that may hinder or block new learning; can be designed to uncover incorrect or incomplete knowledge, attitudes, or values.

 

Anonymous Notes

Write one thing you’d like to tell the instructor about class or the topic covered.  It can be anything. Leave the sheet on the way out of the room. Be professional.

Affective Response

Students pair up and talk about how an individual’s feelings about the topic being addressed in class and share how the topic relates to the field of study.

RSQC2

(Recall, Summarize, Question, Connect and Comment) - Students write brief statements that recall, summarize, question, connect and comment on meaningful points from a previous class.

​

Resource Referral

Students identify what learning needs that they have and where they might seek out resources.  This could be for extra tutoring on a subject or maybe some mental health opportunities if needed too. 

Reflective Summary

Students work in pairs to summarize what has been learned in class thus far that day.

 

Send a Problem

This technique provides students with a few problems and asks them to state or write the principle that best applies to each problem.

Small-Group Instructional Diagnoses (SGIDs)

2 minutes to compare what people are struggling with within small groups.  Students share out the top issues for the faculty member to reteach or touch upon again.

Pair, Share, Repeat

Students pair and share and then pair again to find another person with whom to explain what they just learned from the previous conversation.

 

Top Ten

Students create a top ten list of facts/ideas about the given topic. 

 

Activate Prior Knowledge (APK)

Students shout out concepts that they have previously mastered or related to the topic or word on the board/screen. Students can also share personal connections/experiences with the topic. Limit discussion to 5 minutes. Set a timer.

Text a Friend

Students text a friend and ask that person to answer a question.  If that person does not know the answer, they are encouraged to suggest someone who might know the information.

 

Chaining

Intertwine items to be remembered into a story.

 

Persuade a Friend

Pair with another student who has the opposite opinion on the topic and try to persuade them to your side.
